MPT Requests Customers to Avoid Purchasing SIM Cards Without Proper Registration

(Yangon, 18th June 2020) – According to Post and Telecommunications Department (PTD) regulations, only the official points-of-sales of telecom operators are authorized to sell new SIM cards to customers and as such MPT had implemented the “Activation after Verification” scheme  to ensure that MPT SIM cards are not being sold to our valued customers without accurate registration.

Furthermore, SIM cards cannot be activated without verification of proper identification to avoid any fraudulent activities and where each customer can possess a maximum of two SIM cards. Identification such as NRC Number for Myanmar Citizens or Passport for Foreigners is required to complete the SIM registration.

Pre-registered SIM cards previously sold in the market without accurate personal information and proper identification had already been placed under “one way blocked” status and scheduled to be terminated after 30th June 2020. As such, MPT would like to urge our valued customers to register their SIM cards without fail and also to avoid purchasing MPT SIM cards from shops or vendors who refuse to or unable to assist in customers with proper SIM registration process.

Moreover, any sales partners of MPT are strictly prohibited from selling SIM cards to customers without registration or selling pre-registered SIM cards in any case and should be aware that PTD has vowed to take serious legal action to the full extent of the law against any violators.

“I would like to reiterate that SIM registration is required by law and important to avoid malicious activities by criminals. Subsequently, MPT has been actively conducting SIM registration for our customers as per our well established ‘Activation after Verification’ scheme using various channels. Most importantly, I would like to remind our customers to purchase MPT SIM cards only from authorized vendors,” said Mr. Tetsunori Nagashima, CCO of MPT-KSGM JO.

Registering the SIM Card under their legal name and proper identification can help customers enjoy MPT’s services safely, securely and avoid malicious activity by criminals especially in mobile financial services. SIM Registration can also help avoid misuse and exploitation by scammers and fraudsters.

Though Myanmar has achieved significant growth in network coverage and internet access thanks to sector liberalization, there remain many who are under-connected and regularly drop off from the internet for a period of time when they exhaust their data balance. Discover is designed to help people stay on the internet more consistently by bridging these gaps and helping to keep MPT subscribers connected until they can buy data again.

As the region continues to address the COVID-19 health crisis, it’s important to explore ways to help people in Myanmar stay connected, have more consistent access to health information and other resources on the internet, and be able to stay connected with their friends and loved ones. To help connect people to accurate health information, COVID-19 health resources will also be highlighted on the Discover homepage.

As emphasized by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, access to digital services plays a critical role during COVID-19. To help support connectivity and access, Discover is being provided during this period while the tariff and pricing framework is suspended by the regulator, Posts and Telecommunications Department (PTD).

“The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has encouraged Myanmar’s mobile operators to provide more affordable services to the people. We welcome this initiative by Facebook and Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) to launch Discover, which allows people to browse the internet using a daily balance of free data from the mobile operator. This will improve access to information and other resources on the internet, including accurate health information”, said U Soe Thein, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

“Facebook Connectivity and MPT are pleased to launch Discover in Myanmar today. We believe it’s particularly important to help people stay connected during this time, and Discover will contribute to these efforts. Discover is designed to help people stay on the internet more consistently. We’ll also be assessing how Discover can help  support internet adoption in Myanmar,” said Tom Chottayil Varghese, Head of Connectivity and Access Policy (APAC), Facebook.

“MPT’s goal since the beginning of COVID-19 outbreak has been to keep Myanmar connected. With the launch of Discover, in partnership with Facebook, our customers will be able to stay connected with their family and friends more consistently, have better access to important and accurate health information online. I am confident that Discover will bring many benefits for our customers and communities nationwide,” said Tetsunori Nagashima, Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, draconian measures have been put in place in Myanmar to stop the spread of the virus across the nation and like many other countries across the world, the education sector in Myanmar has been greatly impacted by this with the closing of schools nationwide as a precautionary measure.

Ministry of Education (MOE) has a mandate to significantly and rapidly improve Myanmar’s education system and fundamental curriculum changes are being made for every grade within the Basic Education System with changes to Grades 4, 7, and 10 are planned for 2020-21 School Year.

As new curriculums are scheduled to be implemented, basic education teachers across Myanmar were initially scheduled to go through a rigorous training regime during the summer holiday period. However, the COVID-19 outbreak has derailed this program as physical training programs are not permitted and instead teachers will be able to learn remotely via Myanmar Digital Education Platform (MDEP), the state-of-the-art online training program developed by Ministry of Education.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and with schools closed for an extended period, we have to come up with a system to facilitate the continuation of learning with the use of remote learning platforms like Myanmar Digital Education Platform (MDEP) implemented by the Ministry of Education. We understand the role education plays for our future generations and the importance of their educators and that’s why we are supporting teachers nationwide, who are staying home due to COVID-19, by providing free data access to the MDEP website for six months. Teachers can utilize this unique learning opportunity to overcome barriers with efficient knowledge transfer before the start of the new school year.” said U Ko Ko Aung, Deputy Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM JO.
