The leading telecom operator is providing new ways to help raise money to support
flood relief and rebuilding efforts around the country

Yangon, Myanmar, 22 October, 2015 – Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), the first and leading telecommunications operator in Myanmar, announced today that they are the official partners of the first ever Telethon taking place in Myanmar on October 24.

From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, anyone can call MPT at 01 8619555 to make a pledge to support rebuilding efforts around the country. The Telethon is part of the Coca-Cola Thadingyut Charity Music Festival—a fundraiser for rebuilding flood-affected areas in Myanmar in partnership with Network Activities Group. MPT is both the official partner of the charity efforts, and will also be providing telecommunications solutions for the Telethon.

Answering the calls and taking pledges during the Telethon are some of Myanmar’s most famous performers, actors, and actresses. Participating celebrities include: Nay Toe, Pyay Ti Oo, Wut Hmone Shwe Yee, Nan Su Yati Soe, Htet Htet Htun (Miss Universe Myanmar 2016), May Barani Thaw (Miss Universe Myanmar 2015), Han Lay (First Runner Up, Miss Universe Myanmar 2015), and Cho Cho Tun (Second Runner Up, Miss Universe Myanmar 2015).

“This first ever Telethon fundraiser in Myanmar is part of MPT’s ongoing efforts to support the relief work being done in the aftermath of the flooding around the country. The charity concert is both for a good cause, as well as an event that will appeal to the whole family, bringing together performers from various generations and musical styles and MPT is proud to be a part of it,” said Mr. Koichi Kawase, Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations. Once pledges are made, the money can be deposited at any YOMA Bank to the Rebuild Myanmar Fund.

Information collected during the Telethon calls include: caller name, donation amount, NRC number, city of residence, and contact phone number.

Previously, MPT donated: 10 million Kyats each to Rakhine State, Sagaing Division, and Magwe Division; 20 million Kyats to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief & Resettlement; and 30 million Kyat to the National Disaster Management Committee. The company also sent over 3,000 food packages to Ayeyarwaddy, Chin, Rakhine, Sagaing, and Magway. Through MPT’s SMS Donation Program for customers, the company was able to help facilitate the fundraising of nearly 300 million Kyats (296,530,500 Kyats) from MPT customers to donate to flooded areas and people in need.
