MPT Nationwide Grassroots Festivals and U-14 Youth Football Matches Huge Success with Over 4,000 Myanmar Students Showcasing Their Skills06 Dec 2018
(Yangon, 6th December 2018) Myanmar’s first and leading telecommunications operator, MPT in collaboration with the Myanmar National League (MNL) and the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF), as well as the Department of Basic Education, successfully concluded the MPT Nationwide U-14 Football Tournament and the MPT Grassroots Football Festival aimed at aiding the athletic and technical development the country’s future footballers and cultivating a healthy lifestyle among the youth, which were organized since July this year.
With participation free for young players, the U-14 matches and Grassroots events drew an impressive amount of more than 100 teams from around the country, and were held at venues across Mandalay, Monywa, Bago, Mawlamyine, Sittwe, Pathein, Yangon and Taunggyi. The effort to inspire youth to be successful in sports, is part of MPT’s “Myanmar In Our Heart” initiative which also encompasses CSR efforts targeting the country’s next generation of young people.
Mr. Yoshiaki Benino, Chief Operating Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations said, “The success of the football events organized especially for youth players nationwide is a testament to the passion and enthusiasm for the sport amongst the country’s young generation. Actively engaging in sports has many benefits including improving physical health, learning teamwork and with hard work and the right guidance, opportunities to become Myanmar selected players. Together with our partners, MPT is honored to be a part of Myanmar’s sports development journey by hosting these events and would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the participating players, coaches and their supporters who are doing their part to elevate the country’s football to even greater heights.”
Through Myanmar’s leading telecommunications operator’s support for the MNL, the respective organizations have been collaborating to increase involvement at all age groups through football activities including various MPT Grassroots events for children aged between six and twelve as well as U-14 and university student-level tournaments. In September 2018, MPT also released a Basic Football Skill Drills and Exercises video series, in the form of free 15,000 DVDs distributed at the events and through other media channels, with the purpose to help youth aspiring to become football household names.
The U-14 and Grassroots events also act as platforms for the MFF’s scouting activities, allowing the Federation’s officials and coaches the chance to identify potential players from all over the country to be recruited into the national football talent pool. In addition, they also encourage coaches, with 400 participating throughout this year, to hone their training capabilities as local physical trainers (teachers) from schools receive training from experts as part of the Grassroots program. This sustainable approach means trainers are able to then impart their knowledge to others at their respective schools, effectively equipping them with the experience to cultivate Myanmar’s football stars of tomorrow, even at the state and regional level, in the longer term.
U Soe Moe Kyaw, CEO of Myanmar National League said, “The Myanmar National League and Myanmar Football Federation are pleased with the results of the well-participated nationwide youth matches, which gave us the chance to discover new young players and encourage them as they pursue their footballing dreams. From these football matches in eight regions of the country, we were thrilled to see the talents on display, with many showcasing their skills and winning ability on the field. With more youth initiatives and the strong commitment and support from MPT, the future of Myanmar football looks brighter and we would like to thank everybody involved, from the children and their coaches and supporters, for their enthusiastic efforts in competing at this year’s exciting events.”
MPT has been actively engaging in several CSR activities nationwide, taking part in several activities in the areas of education, healthcare and even entrepreneurship programs – in particular for the youth, who will be the ones moving the country forward in the future.
