MPT Successfully Handed Over All Hand Washing Facilities at Schools in Three Regions Improving Health And Hygiene Among Country’s Youth11 Oct 2018
(Yangon, 11th October 2018) MPT today announced the successful completion of handwashing facilities that will serve 2,400 students from 15 Basic Education Primary Schools in Mandalay, Mon and Kayin, as part of its ‘Handwashing Program’ that was carried out in collaboration with the Public Health Department, Ministry of Health and Sports. The initiative was launched earlier in July to help educate young schoolchildren on how to maintain personal hygiene with proper and regular handwashing.
The campaign by MPT involved the construction of hand washing facilities – including spaces, water taps, piping and water tanks – at the participating schools and educating the students about ensuring hygiene through proper hand washing techniques, particularly before and after consuming meals or going to the toilet. Aiming to address the lack of awareness about the benefits of ensuring good sanitary conditions among the young such as preventing illnesses through bacterial infections or from germs, the Ministry of Health and Sports and MPT selected five schools each from the three regions to take part in the comprehensive program.
“Poor hygiene and bad sanitary conditions can have a negative impact on the health of many, especially for children. We are pleased to have successfully set up the handwashing facilities at the 15 schools and carried out presentations to educate the students about why it is so important to regularly wash their hands thoroughly. They can then go on to help inform their families and friends on the positives of cultivating good handwashing habits, benefiting entire communities. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health and Sports for its collaborative support from when we began back in July for this public health and wellness initiative. It is our hope that the young students continue to utilize the facilities long into the future,” said Mr. Yoshiaki Benino, Chief Operating Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations.
From the beginning of July 2018 to end of October 2018, MPT ran their hand washing campaign as a part of its overall “Myanmar In Our Heart” initiatives. From the Ks 86 million provisioned for the project, the funds were allocated towards the building of water tanks, water pumps, tube wells, group hand washing concrete facilities at the selected schools.
MPT, as Myanmar’s first and leading telecommunications operator, runs a wide range of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in health sector across local communities in Myanmar. This month, MPT again partnered up with the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) to kick off its second ‘First Aid For All’ campaign and also continued its ‘Clean and Sustainable Water Program’ through which tube-wells and ponds were constructed at water-stressed areas across the country.
