Upper Myanmar’s Finest Youth Players to Contest Zonal Leg of MPT- University Football Tournament 2018

(Yangon, 1st June 2018) Football fever hits Mandalay starting from today as Upper Myanmar’s top university teams look to set the city’s fields alight with dazzling showcases of skill when they compete for regional honors at the MPT University Football Tournament 2018. A total of 12 teams, including participants in the men’s and women’s categories, will first play in group matches – two for each category – starting from today for places in the knockout stages.

The teams from Nay Pyi Taw, Monywa, Taunggyi, Mandalay, Magway and Myitkyina will be taking part in the men’s group matches to be held at Ba Htoo Stadium while the women’s groups also from the same universities, take to the pitch at the Mandalay University Football Stadium for their fixtures. On top of being crowned champions of Upper Myanmar, the victorious universities will then be representing the zone at the national final matches against the winners from the Lower Myanmar zone tournament.

“The next zonal stage of the MPT- University Football Tournament promises to be a pulsating affair as Upper Myanmar’s finest players compete to be crowned as regional champions. The winners here will be taking on the champions of Lower Myanmar in August for national honors in Yangon. The tournament’s strong support is a testament to the huge impact the sport has in the country, embodying the values of sportsmanship and maintaining healthy lifestyles, especially for the youth. Good luck to all the teams and we look forward to your inspired performances on the field!” said Mr. Reizo Umeda, Chief Commercial Officer for MPT-KSGM Joint Operations.

As per the tournament’s rules, the teams will be placed into two groups per category and play in a round-robin format from which the top two from each men’s and women’s groups will progress to the semi-finals. At the completion of the semi-finals, the category grand final matches will be held on 11 June.

The MPT University Football Tournament, backed by the Ministry of Education, is one of the initiatives by Myanmar’s leading telecommunication services operator to raise youth participation whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle through football. MPT is collaborating with the MNL to promote long-term growth of football and foster a new generation of talented players for the country.

We have seen the skills and talents of lower Myanmar’s regional team from MPT – University Football Tournament 2018 and we hope to also see the skills of Upper Myanmar’s regional team. We also hope to produce many football talents in Myanmar that is able to represent the country for the upcoming 2018 ASEAN University Games.” said U Soe Moe Kyaw, CEO of Myanmar National League.

By participating more from the youth, they will gain the leadership skill, sportsmanship, self-discipline and of course, healthy living. We hope that we encourage the students to be more active in participating in other sport activity games such as MPT – University Football Tournament game. We aim that they will compete in the international sport games as the representative of Myanmar in the future which will achieve incredible benefit for the youth. We would also like to thank MPT for organizing this nationwide tournament and to the team players and coaches who are eager to participate in this tournament”, said Dr. Tin Htun Aung, Chairman of the Universities’ Football Sub-Committee and Rector for the Mandalay University of Education.

The tournament was also held to cultivate football talents in preparation for the upcoming 2018 ASEAN University Games, which Myanmar is hosting. In-line with fair-play principles, all of the tournament’s fixtures will be conducted with rules laid down for international games to ensure the safety of players even in competitive matches.

For the Lower Myanmar zone, eight men’s matches and six women’s matches were held between 20 to 31 May, with the teams from Dagon and Pathein being crowned the inaugural men’s and women’s MPT University Football Tournament zonal winners respectively. In the men’s competition, Pathein and Yangon (West) emerged as first and second runners up. For the women, Dagon and Yangon were first and second runners up. The Upper Myanmar zone matches will begin at Ba Htoo Stadium on 1 June, with the universities from Nay Pyi Taw and Monywa playing against each other.
